Thirty-five years after first joining the R&S Records family, British techno pioneer Dave Angel returns to the seminal Belgian label with his most personal and expansive album to date.

Some creative relationships are measured in releases. Others are measured in decades.

For Dave Angel and R&S Records, the connection stretches back to 1991, when the London producer first joined the Belgian label after being discovered by founder Renaat Vandepapeliere.

Now, 35 years after that first chapter, Angel returns to R&S with ‘A Time And Place’, a 15-track album that reconnects one of British techno’s defining voices with the label that helped introduce him to the world.

Rather than simply looking backwards, however, the album represents a continuation of an artistic conversation that began more than three decades ago.

From ‘1st Voyage’ to the Present

Angel’s relationship with R&S began when Vandepapeliere discovered his ‘Rolling Thunder’ project and invited the young London producer to Belgium.

The resulting ‘1st Voyage’ EP became a defining early release in Angel’s career, followed by a succession of acclaimed projects including ‘Stairway To Heaven’, ‘3rd Voyage’ and appearances on the influential ‘In Order To Dance’ compilation series.

He also released music through R&S sister imprint Apollo, establishing a creative partnership that would become an important part of the development of both Angel’s career and the wider UK techno movement.

Three and a half decades later, A Time And Place revisits that relationship from an entirely different point in the artist’s life.

The album is not an exercise in nostalgia. Instead, it reflects the perspective of an artist whose musical curiosity has continued to evolve.

Beyond Techno

Across 15 compositions, Angel moves beyond the traditional boundaries of techno, drawing on jazz, soul, improvisation and richly textured electronic production.

Rhythmic precision sits alongside melody, warmth and emotional depth, while themes including family, heritage, nature and community give the album a deeply personal dimension.

That wider musical perspective is rooted in Angel’s upbringing. Raised in an environment immersed in live music and jazz culture, his relationship with electronic music has always existed alongside a much broader musical vocabulary.

Those influences now surface naturally throughout A Time And Place.

The album also features a carefully selected group of collaborators.

Celebrated trumpeter Steve Waterman appears on ‘Réflexion’ and ‘The Yellow Butterfly’, bringing a lyrical, jazz-inflected presence to the record.

Robert Owens, one of Chicago house music’s most distinctive vocalists, features on ‘Harmony Serenade’, while guitarist Merv Carswell and vocalist Aurii Sky, Angel’s daughter, contribute to the album’s rich palette.

A New Chapter With R&S

For R&S Records, A Time And Place represents the renewal of a relationship that dates back to the label’s formative years.

For Angel, it represents something more personal: a reflection on everything that has come before while continuing to explore what comes next.

Thirty-five years after 1st Voyage introduced his music to the R&S audience, A Time And Place finds Angel and the label reunited with the same spirit of curiosity and forward thinking that originally brought them together.

The result is an album that acknowledges the legacy of British techno without being defined by it.

‘A Time And Place’ by Dave Angel is out now on R&S Records across 3LP and digital formats.
