Inner City Enter a New Chapter With ‘Positivity’, Bringing Detroit Legacy and Vocal House Energy Together
Nearly four decades after helping introduce Detroit’s electronic sound to a worldwide audience, Inner City are opening another chapter with ‘Positivity’, a new vocal House single featuring Detroit singer Steffanie Christi’an.
Released 16 October 2026 on Inner City Detroit, the track brings together Kevin Saunderson, Dantiez Saunderson and Steffanie Christi’an for a record that places the emotional force of a powerful vocal at the centre of Inner City’s unmistakable electronic identity.
There is something particularly fitting about the way ‘Positivity’ connects generations. Kevin Saunderson remains one of the architects of Detroit Techno, while Dantiez represents the continuation of that musical lineage and Christi’an brings her own soulful presence to a project whose foundations have always extended beyond the confines of a single genre.
Rather than looking backwards, the new single points towards where Inner City can go next.
Detroit Roots, House Soul
Produced and written by Kevin and Dantiez Saunderson, ‘Positivity’ sits comfortably between House, Soul, R&B and Detroit electronic music, combining a driving club framework with an uplifting vocal performance.
It follows the trio’s recent collaboration ‘Turn Me On’, released through Defected’s Glitterbox, and continues a renewed period of activity around Inner City.
The first release arrives with the Original Mix alongside a Todd Terry KMS Dub, immediately adding another important name from House music history to the story.
The New York legend returns for a second remix package on 6 November, featuring his full remix, a Remix Edit and a further interpretation from Detroit House veteran Chuck Daniels.
Four Decades of Inner City
Inner City’s influence on electronic music is difficult to overstate.
Formed by Kevin Saunderson in Detroit in 1987, the group became one of the key vehicles through which Detroit’s emerging electronic sound reached audiences far beyond Michigan.
Tracks including ‘Big Fun’ and ‘Good Life’, taken from the platinum-selling Paradise, became international dancefloor landmarks and remain deeply embedded in the history of electronic music.
The numbers tell part of the story: Inner City have sold more than six million records worldwide, achieved nine UK Top 40 singles and delivered five US Billboard Dance number ones.
But their relevance has never been purely historical.
With Kevin and Dantiez Saunderson now joined by Steffanie Christi’an, Inner City are finding a way to connect the project’s original DNA with a new generation of voices and influences.
The Road to 2027
The timing of ‘Positivity’ is significant.
Kevin Saunderson’s KMS Records approaches its 40th anniversary in 2027, setting the stage for another major period around one of Detroit’s most enduring musical institutions.
For Inner City, that milestone arrives not simply as a celebration of the past, but as an opportunity to demonstrate that Detroit’s legacy remains capable of evolving.
‘Positivity’ captures precisely that idea: a record rooted in history, but designed for today’s dancefloor.
